Sadly enough Jo, but it has been this way in America since it's inception.  It stems from the fact that about half of the original 13 colonies were based on slavery sytems for income.  People of color have always been viewed as less than equal to the white man.  Lincoln freed the slaves but some people have never been able to remove the color mindset from their personal thinkings.  It angers me that this country that was created on teh basis that ALL men are created EQUAL in teh eyes of GOD still can't get past this thing called skin color, we all bleed the same, but some still say we are not equal.

No, they weren't.  Only about half of them used slaves as a vital part of the workforce.  Colonies like Georgia had the largest slave population while colonies like Connecticut had very few slaves.
